Weeks off-grid. Autonomy is the product.

A 4x4 recharges by driving. An overland rig has to hold and generate enough energy to stay parked — for a week, a fortnight, a season — with everything on board still running. That one difference changes every decision in the build.

Autonomy is the product

Everything in an overland build follows from one number: the longest stretch you realistically want to sit still without plugging in.

That number sizes the house bank, because you are storing days of consumption rather than one night of it. At that scale the answer is large-format lithium (LFP) with integrated management, which is what Victron Energy and MG Energy Systems build for. It also rules out relying on a single charge source. Solar carries you while you are standing still, a DC-DC charger banks energy on every travel day, and in the right conditions a compact wind generator keeps working through the night when the panels have stopped.

Combining sources is what keeps a rig out. Depending on one is what ends a stay early: a week of overcast, a fortnight parked, one alternator fault, and the trip is over.

Solar, and the roof you have to fit it on

Solar decides how long you can sit still. Roof space decides how much solar you get. That makes efficiency per square metre a real specification, not a marketing line.

On an expedition roof, a caravan or a motorhome, the area is already competing with hatches, vents, air conditioning, spare wheels and racks. SunPower / Maxeon cells deliver more power from the same panel area, which is precisely the constraint you are up against. Behind the array, an MPPT controller extracts meaningfully more from a given panel than a basic regulator, especially in cool, bright or partially shaded conditions, and it has to be matched to both the array and the bank.

Silentwind covers the case the panels cannot: a rig parked in wind, in winter, with short days. Solar and wind are complementary rather than competing, and on a long stay in the wrong season that difference is the difference.

Living with it, and fixing it a thousand kilometres from a dealer

A remote rig is judged on two things: whether it works, and whether you can find out why when it does not.

So the AC side gets designed deliberately. Work out which appliances genuinely need inverted AC and which will happily run on DC, because every unnecessary AC load costs you battery, and an inverter sized for a peak you never draw is dead weight you carry across a continent.

The distribution and protection layer gets built to be traced with a multimeter: labelled circuits, accessible fuses, protection you can reach without dismantling the joinery. And monitoring reports the truth — real state of charge, current draw and battery health — rather than a vague fuel gauge. In a caravan or motorhome the same system also has to be lived with, which means it must be quiet, legible and safe to use by someone who did not build it.

What to get right

  • Start from your longest realistic off-grid stretch, then size storage and generation to match. Oversizing the bank without the solar to refill it just adds weight; oversizing solar without the bank to hold it just wastes roof.
  • Layer your charging. Solar for standing still, DC-DC for travel days, wind where the trip suits it. A single source is what ends a stay early.
  • Specify the array, the MPPT controller and the battery as one set. A well-matched MPPT pulls meaningfully more out of the same panel area, which is the whole game when the roof is full.
  • Design the AC side on purpose. Decide which appliances truly need inverted AC and which can run on DC. Every unnecessary AC load costs you battery, and an oversized inverter is weight you carry for nothing.
  • Build it to be serviced in the field. Rated enclosures, solid mounting, labelled circuits and accessible protection are what let you fix a fault where there is no dealer.
  • Plan monitoring and battery protection from the start. Accurate state of charge, and protection against deep discharge, over-temperature and load faults, are what let you trust the system where trust actually matters.
  • Budget water as an electrical load. Treatment, pumping and heating all draw current. Leaving them out of the sums is the most common reason a system comes up short.

Frequently asked questions

How long can a properly built overland system stay off-grid?

That depends on your loads, your bank and how much you can put back from solar and driving, so the honest answer is a design one rather than a number. A system whose storage and layered charging are matched to real consumption will support extended off-grid use. A system leaning on one charge source rarely lasts weeks. Size it around how you actually travel and the figure becomes one you can depend on.

Why lithium (LFP) rather than lead-acid for a big house bank?

It stores more usable energy for the weight and the space, it tolerates being deeply cycled every day, and it accepts charge fast enough to refill from a day's drive or a few hours of good sun. All three matter on a payload-limited vehicle. The trade-offs are the upfront cost and the need to do it properly, which is why DC-DC charging, a suitable solar controller and real monitoring belong in the same conversation as the battery.

Does this apply to a caravan or motorhome, or only to an expedition truck?

The same architecture applies. A caravan or motorhome has exactly the same problem — days of consumption, no shore power, a finite roof — and usually a heavier appliance load with more roof to work with. The bank, the array, the charging strategy and the protection layer are specified on identical logic.

Can I replace the generator entirely?

For most overland builds, yes. A lithium bank with a properly sized inverter delivers power instantly and silently, with no fuel to carry and no exhaust in camp. Whether it replaces the generator outright comes down to your heaviest AC loads and how much you can recharge each day. Where it does not, the generator usually becomes a charger for the bank rather than the thing your appliances run from.
